O'Fallon tops Softball Redbirds - STLToday - 5/19/2015

Barnouski pitches, hits O'Fallon to victory against Alton

GODFREY • Good pitching, clutch hitting and good defense lifted O'Fallon past Alton 3-1 in a Southwestern Conference softball game Tuesday.

Junior pitcher Addie Barnouski went the distance for the Panthers (10-18 overall, 6-8 conference), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Barnouski struck out 13, including six looking. She also had the key hit on offense with a two-out, two-run single in the third inning.

"Well, I knew I needed to get a hit to score the runners," Barnouski said. "They did all that work to get on base. (Alton pitcher Brittany Roady) was throwing a lot inside, so I knew I was going to get an inside pitch."

Barnouski stole second and third after her crucial single and then scored on an infield single by senior third baseman Sami Stadts. It gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead and meant Barnouski manufactured her own insurance run.

Barnouski gave up her lone run in the fourth. She walked one and gave up singles to sophomore Bronte Fencel and freshman Taylor Herrin to load the bases. She went to a full count on Roady before walking her, scoring freshman Miranda Hudson.

Besides the fourth, only two players reached base for the Redbirds (17-14, 5-9).

"She's was on," O'Fallon coach Kelly Paproth said. "She's been on all season long. She keeps us in every game. She's the best pitcher in the area. And I will stand behind that. We need to play better behind her."

After the third, Roady was in control for the Redbirds.

She worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the sixth and relied on a some good defense.

"They had our number," Alton coach Dan Carter said. "We didn't hit the ball very well, and if you don't hit you cant score. Six strikeouts looking was really the problem. Even if we end up striking out that's one thing, but you can't take the third strike looking on those close pitches. Like I just told the girls, sometimes you might just run into one. But with bases loaded you can't take third strike for the third out of the inning it's going to kill you."
