ALTON 7, BELLEVILLE EAST 6 (10 INNINGS): Adam Stilts singled in Brandon Droste with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to give Alton a 7-6 Southwestern Conference win over Belleville East at Redbird Field Tuesday, taking the Redbirds to 14-8 on the year, 3-5 in the SWC; the Lancers fell to 10-12 overall, 3-5 in the league.

Belleville East had gone to a 4-0 lead through the middle of the fifth before the Redbirds scored six times; solo runs in the fifth and sixth by the Lancers sent the game to extras before Stilts' heroics.

Robby Taul was 1-for-5 on the day with a double and RBI for AHS, with Steven Nguyen 1-for-4 with a run scored, Mike Hampton 1-for-3 with a run scored, Steven Pattan a run scored, Droste 1-for-3 with a run scored, Ben Mossman 1-for-4 with a run scored and Stilts 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Taul got the win, conceding just a hit in an inning pitched.

The Redbirds are at O'Fallon at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and at Valmeyer for an 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader.

Redbirds split twinbill with MICDS - Riverbender.com - 4/8/2017

Redbirds come back in baseball twinbill to win second game 11-10, fall short in first contest

ALTON – The late Joe Garigiola probably said it best.

“Baseball is a funny game.”

Saturday's doubleheader between Alton and MICDS of Ladue, Mo. may had been proof positive. Both games had their share of big innings, plays that didn't quite go as intended and in the end, a pair of high-scoring games that the Rams and Redbirds split, MICDS winning the opener 11-8 and Alton coming back from 7-0 down to take the nightcap 11-10 at Redbird Field. The split put Alton's record at 9-4 on the year while the Rams went to 2-5.

Needless to say, it was a pretty interesting day for both teams. “A lot of really weird baseball,” said Redbird coach Todd Haug. “We spotted them a lead in the second game, they spotted us a lead in the first game. Sometimes, you don't know how the wins come, but in this case, we're happy for this one.

“We'll take the (second game) win, but by no means does it take away from the sour grapes from the first game. By the same token, we need to be able to bounce back and we were down seven runs; we figured out a way to win. That's baseball.”

Haug knows the Redbirds still have work to do to get to where they want to be. “We've got a lot of work to do,” Haug said. “We've got a very young team; when I looked out there, we've got five sophomores, three juniors and a senior, so we're a very young team having to learn how to compete.

Alton got out to a 5-1 lead in the opener with a five-run first, highlighted by a Brandon Droste triple to right that brought home Steven Pattan and Ben Mossman and a Charlie Erler successful bunt that got Droste home to seemingly give Alton a good cushion. Alton added a run in the second, but the Rams got back to 6-4 in the fourth thanks in part to a two-run double from Harry Hegeman. The Redbirds countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to stay ahead 8-4.

The Rams chipped away at the Redbirds, scoring solo runs in the fifth and sixth to get to 8-6 through six innings before MICDS put up five runs in the top of the seventh, highilighted by by a bases-loaded single from Hegeman to pull the Rams to 8-7; they tied it on a fielder's choice before Andrew Krause took a pitch deep to left-center field over the fence for a three-run shot, putting MICDS up 11-8. Hegeman then retired the Redbirds to end the game, but not before the Redbirds threw a scare into the Rams when Adam Stilts got a two-out single to seemingly ignite Alton.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead through an inning of the nightcap, then exploded for seven runs in the top of the second, starting when Chase Fendelman sacrificed Ward Hanser and Will Vogel over; MICDS scored on a passed ball and a hit batsman before Luke Layton struck a bases-clearing triple to put the Rams up 6-0, coming home on a Mike Long single to give the Rams a seemingly insurmountable 7-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth, when the Redbirds scored four times to cut the lead to 7-4, getting a pair of runs on a hit batsman and a walk with the bases loaded; a fielder's choice and another bases-loaded walk brought in two more runs for Alton, who scored twice more in the sixth before MICDS seemingly put the game away with a three-run seventh after Hanser hit a bases-loaded triple.

Alton's seventh-inning rally started when Adam Stilts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Erler before Mossman scored when Robby Taul reached on an error to keep the bases loaded for the Redbirds. Two straight infield flies left Alton with one last chance, and Droste responded with a double that scored Breyon Reed, Stilts and Taul to win the game for Alton.

Droste was 1-for-4 in the opener with the triple and a run scored; Pattan was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored and Erler was 2-for-2 with a RBI; Cole Akal took the loss for Alton, going just a third of an inning and fanning one. Droste was 1-for-4 with the walkoff double in the nightcap with five RBIs for the game; Reed was 1-for-1 with a triple with two runs scored, one on a sixth-inning balk following the triple that pulled Alton close. Mossman was 1-for-2 with with rwo runs scored and Stilts was 1-for-2 with a RBI and three runs scored.

The Redbirds head to GCS Ballpark in Sauget for a 6:30 p.m. Monday game against Carlyle before heading to Fletcher Field in Collinsville for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday Southwestern Conference clash with the Kahoks.

Tigers win close league contest over Alton to go to 9-0 on year

EDWARDSVILLE – Alton and Edwardsville have had quite the baseball rivalry the past few years. Games between the two Southwestern Conference teams have been close and hard-fought.

Tuesday afternoon's encounter was no exception, with Edwardsville pitcher Kade Burns and Alton pitcher Robbie Taul hooking up in what turned out to be a pitcher's duel, the difference coming in the bottom of the fourth when Tiger freshman Drake Westcott launched a Taul offering over the fence in right-center to give Edwardsville all they really needed as the Tigers took a 2-0 win over the Redbirds at EHS' Tom Pile Field.

The Tigers went to 9-0 overall, 3-0 in the SWC; the Redbirds fell to 8-2, 0-2 in the league. The game, originally scheduled for Redbird Field, was switched to Tom Pile Field when a sudden rainstorm hit the Alton area not long before the scheduled start time.

“It was a good win for us,” said Tiger coach Tim Funkhouser. “We didn't swing the bats as well as we would like and they had a tough time scratching out some baserunners as well. Kade Burns has been outstanding for us all year and he didn't disappoint again. Just a couple of little things – Drake Westcott squared one up and he put a good swing on one and we were able to get another run scratched out with (Joel) Quirin getting the single to drop in; Blake Burris did a great job running on the pitch.

“Drake got another hit with two strikes and he showed his versatility; he's not a big fly guy. Overall, our pitching has been outstanding this year. Offensively, we've scored some runs, but we know we have a lot more upside there and a lot more room for improvement; that'll come as the season progresses.”

Burns gave up just three hits in 6.1 innings of work, two of them coming in the top of the seventh, and struck out 10, four of them coming in the first inning when Mike Hampton reached on a dropped third strike. Only one other baserunner reached before the seventh on Burns, when Adam Stilts reached on a single, and he was erased on a double play the next man up.

After getting off to an 8-0 start, the Redbirds have dropped their last two games, both league contests to O'Fallon and the Tigers.

“There's no moral victories here,” said Redbird coach Todd Haug. “I'm not trying to just keep it close; we have some things we need to work on and they got an earful in terms of the expectations – there were some things I wasn't happy with in terms of how we executed that were not necessarily baseball fundamentals, but more so the approach to the game. The expectations were reiterated and we'll deal with the baseball side tomorrow at practice.”

Both Taul's and Burns' efforts on the mound were a telling factor in the game, Haug felt. “You got a good indication from both sides today,” Haug said, “you don't need a big-time fastball to be successful in this league; what you have to do is mix pitches and have to be able to throw multiple pitches for strikes. If you can do that, you'll be in the ballgame.

“I think both sides did it; we tip our hats to (Burns), he did a good job in terms of location, he got a couple of pitches over, but we didn't do ourselves any favors either. Our approach was lackluster.”

Edwardsville's other run came in the sixth when Quirin led off with a single and was replaced by Burris as a pinch runner; he went to third on a Westcott single running on the pitch to put runners on the corners. Reid Hendrickson then grounded into a double play that scored Burris and give EHS an insurance run.

Then came the top of the seventh; Burns got Hampton to ground to third for the first out, then gave up singles to Steven Nguyen and Steven Pattan, with both advancing on a wild pitch. Andrew Yancik then came in to pitch from shortstop and struck out Brandon Droste and Charlie Erler to preserve the win.

That the Tigers have pitchers who can come in and throw a couple of innings or come in to get the win late has been a good thing, Funkhouser thought. “It's been a rare occasion when we've had a closer for our high school team,” Funkhouser said. “It's usually been who's ready to throw next; Yancik has been throwing really well too, so he was able to finish it off today and he'll be ready for Thursday (at home against Belleville West) as well.”

Westcott was 2-for-3 with the homer, RBI and run scored  for the Tigers, with Dylan Burris 1-for-2, Jack Cooper 1-for-2 and Quirin 1-for-3, with Burris getting the other run scored. Steven Nguyen, Pattan and Stilts were all 1-for-3 for the Redbirds on the day. Burns got the win for the Tigers, while Taul took the loss, going four innings, giving up the homer to Westcott on three hits while fanning five. Stilts threw two innings, giving up an earned run on three hits while fanning one.

After Thursday's home league contest against the Maroons, Edwardsville heads to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin for a 4:30 p.m. Friday game before traveling to Belleville East for a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday league game. The Redbirds host Granite City at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and MICDS of St. Louis in a 1:30 p.m. Saturday doubleheader before meeting Carlyle at 4 p.m. Monday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget.

Redbirds fight, but fall in SWC opener at O’Fallon

By Greg Shashack - gshashack@thetelegraph.com

O’FALLON – Alton Redbirds baseball dodged a bullet from Bethalto to extend its season-opening win streak to eight in succession.

Unfortunately for the Redbirds, the O’Fallon Panthers rarely fire and miss.

O’Fallon erased Alton’s early three-run lead with four runs in the fourth and finished off a 5-4 Southwestern Conference victory Tuesday at Blazier Field. It was the SWC opener for both teams.

“It was a solid effort,” Alton coach Todd Haug said. “Two good teams playing today. In a game where you need to come up with a big pitch, big play, big hit, more of those fell (O’Fallon’s) way today. It is what it is. We’ll move forward.”

The Redbirds, who rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Civic Memorial in their last time out Saturday, drop to 8-1 and 0-1 in the conference. O’Fallon is 8-1 and 1-0 in the conference while pushing its winning streak to six in a row.

“It was a hard-fought battle,” Haug said. “We’ll see them again.”

Since Alton handed O’Fallon its only two SWC defeats in a 12-2 run to a league title in 2011, the Panthers have won 11 of their last 12 dates with the Redbirds.

O’Fallon is the defending SWC champion and has won the conference in five of the last seven seasons. The Panthers are a popular pick to repeat in 2017, though Haug will leave that labeling to the media.

“If you guys want to say they’re the favorite, that’s fine,” Haug said. “For us, we have to have a purpose in coming out to play. I’m sure Edwardsville and East and West, nobody’s going to anoint anybody after one game. We’re going to keep putting our work boots on and going to work and we’ll see what’s going on in mid-May.”

Alton outhit O’Fallon 8-4, but eight walks and two errors doomed the Redbirds. All five Panthers runs were unearned. O’Fallon also labored at times in the field, with three of Alton’s runs coming unearned.

“That’s going to happen from time to time,” said O’Fallon coach Jason Portz, who is 410-131 in his 15th season at his alma mater. “(Alton’s) a scrappy club. You’ve got to give them credit. Their ability to hit the away pitch and hit with two strikes, they did some things really good.”

Alton’s Tyler Moxey had two hits before leaving the game with an injury sustained running the bases in the sixth inning. The Redbirds scored twice in the first inning and Steven Pattan’s two-out RBI single extended the lead to 3-0 in the third.

But O’Fallon plated four runs on one hit, four walks and a Redbirds error in the fourth inning. Another Alton error gifted O’Fallon a two-out run in the fifth to make it 5-3.

But the Redbirds continued to fight, cutting the margin to 5-4 in the sixth inning. Alton had the tying run on second base with one out in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not break through against Panthers’ reliever Brayden Arnold.

“I was pretty happy with how we played,” Portz said. “There are some things we can do better. By the middle of April and early May, I think we’re going to be able to.”

Hayden Juenger started and got the win for O’Fallon, giving four runs on seven hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Arnold, who had two hits and two RBIs, earned the save.

Alton’s Charlie Erler took the loss. The starter went 3 1/3 innings, giving four runs (zero earned) on two hits, six walks and two strikeouts.

“I’m proud of our boys,” Haug said. “We stayed in it, we battled and we gave them a finish, we were in a position to tie the ballgame. Just didn’t get the big hit, but that’s OK. … Very young team, but they’re going to battle.

“We’re going to learn from this. One day at a time. That’s the beauty of this team, we haven’t read too much into our start. We can play with anybody and we will play with anybody. We’ll bounce back and be ready for East on Thursday.”

Alton plays at Belleville East on Thursday, while O’Fallon goes to Collinsville to close the first week of Tuesday-Thursday clashes in the SWC.

“The Southwestern Conference is a grind,” Portz said. “To face Alton right away and hand them their first loss, I think that says a lot about our club. … The goal is to come out here and win. We got a 5-4 win and we’ll be happy to move on to Thursday and try to get another conference win.

“I don’t care how you get conference wins in our league, if you get them, no matter how you get them, you want to take them from there and just move on.”
