It is showtime for Alton’s LaJarvia Brown, Katie Mans and Jewell Wagner.

Brown, the consummate team player, is ecstatic to have her teammates and friends joining her this weekend at the IHSA Class 3A girls state track and field meet. She also believes the three of them have a shot to push the team high in the overall standings with solid performances.

“I would like to defend the state championship in the triple jump,” Brown said. “I want to break the state record in the triple jump to prove what I did earlier in the year is legitimate. I hope all of us do well so we can make a name for our school.”

Alton coach Terry Mitchell could not be more proud of his three qualifiers and said he thinks the Redbirds may surprise some people in the team standings if the girls rise to the occasion.

“We spent most of the week working on technique with LaJarvia, Katie and Jewell,” Mitchell said.

Mans is tied for the top qualifying jump in the high jump at 5-5; Brown is rated first in the triple jump. All three girls have a legitimate chance of making finals in their events. Brown qualified in the triple jump, long jump; Mans (high jump); and Wagner (shot put).

Mans said she would love to jump higher than 5-5 in the meet and “stand on the podium with a medal.”

Wagner said she wants to hit 41 feet at state and place in the shot put.

Jersey’s Sydney Jones (long jump; triple jump); and Kiara Chapman (400 meters) are expected to be solid competitors today in the 2A state track and field meet division.

Alton qualified three individual girls for the upcoming Illinois State Track and Field Meet on Friday in the rain-delayed O’Fallon Sectional.

The Redbirds’ LaJarvia Brown and Katie Mans led the way with three first place efforts. Brown was first in the triple jump (38-10.5); first in the long jump (17-11.5); and Mans was first in the high jump (5-5). Jewell Wagner qualified easily in the shot put (40-6).

“I thought we did about as well as I expected,” said Alton coach Terry Mitchell. “We had some personal bests in relays, but not enough to qualify.”

After Brown reached the qualifying mark in the long jump, Mitchell pulled her out to save her for the triple jump and once she had an established lead in that event, he again rested her. Brown was second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.3 and qualified in that event.

“We will just wait and let it go at state,” he said. “We will have a good week of work and will get ready for state.”

Mans did an excellent job in the high jump, Mitchell said.

“She jumped over 5-5 on her first jump and everybody else went out,” he said.

O’Fallon won the meet with 109 points; Alton tied for sixth with Springfield with 44 points. O’Fallon was followed by Bloomington with 56 points; Normal with 52 points; Rock Island with 50 points and Belleville East with 44 points.

Mitchell was prepared to start working his girls next week in the fine points of their events before state.

“I hope we get a good week of work and hopefully we are ready for next week,” he said.

O'Fallon wins 3A sectional team title

O'FALLON, ILL.  O'Fallon had only one first-place finish Friday but its depth proved powerful enough for the team title at the Class 3A O'Fallon Sectional girls track and field meet.

The Panthers finished with 109 points, well ahead of second place Bloomington with 56.

"Overall, I think you've got to say it's a great day," O'Fallon coach Neil James said. He then rattled off the list of events in which the Panthers qualified for state — some had more than one athlete.

They included all four relays, where the Panthers were sectional runners-up in all four. Junior Sam Tidwell captured the 3,200 (11:25.74) followed closely by second-place finisher and senior teammate Noelle Gilster (11:26.00). Tidwell's victory was the only one for O'Fallon.

Mya Watson-Blake and Tamya Houston qualified in the 200, while Angela Buch took second in the 1,600. Tami Cardenas did the same in the 800 but still had her best time of the year (2:16.45). Sophomore Mackenzie Ryan qualified in the triple jump (35-10.5).

"Any time you get that many kids (at state), that's a great accomplishment," James said. "Our kids really competed today and got after it. Was there some disappointments? Sure. But we still ran some of out best times. We'll get everybody rested up and ready to go next week. I'm excited to head up and see what we can do."

Individually, Belleville East senior Miya Dorsey had the best day at the meet.

She won the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, which were both hard-fought victories that took a lot out of her, but she managed to anchor the Lancers surprise winning 1,600-meter relay team to close the night.

"I just wanted to win it for the team," Dorsey said. "We wanted to go to state."

Dorsey trailed an O'Fallon runner with about 110 meters to go but used a solid kick around 100-meter mark to secure first place for the Lancers.

In the 300 hurdles, Dorsey edged Alton's LaJarvia Brown after the final hurdle. In the 100s, she outdueled Autumn Harris of Edwardsville.

"I was just pushing myself," Dorsey said. "I wanted it so bad, so I just went with it."

Alton's Brown won the long jump (17-11.75) and triple jump (38-10.5). Brown passed on her last three attempts in the triple jump.

"I qualified and that's the main thing," Brown said. "I'm going to rest until Monday and then be back at it on Monday."

O'Fallon's Mackenzie Ryan (35-10.5) also qualified even though she was third. Her mark beat the standard for the event. The top two finishers from each event go to state, which begins Thursday at Eastern Illinois University. Those that exceed standards for their event also qualify regardless of finish.

East St. Louis senior Aaliah Herron won the shot put (42-00.25) and was second in the discus (125-02). Sophomore teammates Jazmyn Poole also made it to state in the discus. Granite City senior Catherine Jakich and Alton's Jewel Wagner qualified in the shot put.

West's Ni'Jia McNamee took first place in the 400 (57.78) and was second in the 200 (25.46).

The high jump was especially productive for area athletes. Freshman Katie Mans of Alton won with a leap of 5-5. Also qualifying were Watson-Blake of O'Fallon (5-3), Tamar Mosby of East and Abby Carney of O'Fallon (5-3).

Edwardsville's 3,200 relay team of junior Danielle Bohannon, sophomore Victoria Vegher, sophomore Bailey McGuire and freshman Lori Cashdollar opened the running portion, delayed for more than two hours because of rain, with a first-place finish. It was the Tigers first qualifying relay team in two years.

"In Charleston, our ultimate goal is to make it top eight and be all-state," Bohannon said. "To do that, I think we need to go at least 9:33." The team won in 9:41.89.

Still, after running times well over 10 minutes during indoor season, the quartet has steadily improved and thinks it still has another gear.

"Last year, we had no hope," Bohannon said.

McGuire agreed: "We couldn't get below 10:20. It's hard to believe where we are now. I'm super-stoked. It's my first time going to state. I know were going to work hard and go for it."

Brown, Mans lead Alton to 5th Place in SWC Girls Track Meet - STL Today - 5/6/2015

O'Fallon girls crush field at Southwestern Conference meet

GRANITE CITY • It is now-or-never time for the O'Fallon High girls track and field team.

With just more than a week before sectionals, the Panthers are getting down to business.

O'Fallon took a huge step toward postseason success by toasting the competition at Southwestern Conference championship meet Wednesday on a warm day at Granite City High School.

"The girls really understand that it's time to crank it up," O'Fallon coach Neil James said. "They know they have to turn it up a notch."

The Panthers did just that, finishing with 180.5 points, well ahead of second-place Belleville East (108) and third-place Edwardsville (104). East St. Louis (93.5) Alton (71), Granite City (45), Belleville West (42) and Collinsville (28) rounded out the eight-team field.

The rout started with a victory in the 400-meter relay when the Panthers' quartet won in a brisk time of 49.07. By the meet's third event, the 3,200, it was apparent O'Fallon was going to be nearly impossible to beat.

Junior Sam Tidwell took first (11:53.68) in the 3,200 and senior Rachel Russel was second (11:55.82). The one-two finish gave the Panthers 18 quick points.

"We've been running together a long time," Russel said. "Since I was in seventh grade and she was in sixth. It doesn't matter who wins. We support each other and we support the rest of the team."

Added Tidwell: "We don't think about the points when we are running. We're trying for a good times."

Russel then added: "It's nice when you realize after the race that you actually contributed to your team winning a trophy."

Sophomores Kersten Douglas and Nautica Lockett then went one-two in the 100 to give the Panthers another 18 points. Douglas' winning time was 12.91.

Senior Tami Cardenas and junior Caitlyn Clinton finished first and second, respectively, in the 800 to give the Panthers another point boost. Cardenas, who has been awarded an appointment to the Air Force Academy, led the entire way, but Clinton was never far behind.

Cardenas won in 2:21.36. Clinton recorded a 2:21.82.

"We expect to win this," Cardenas said of the conference meet. "We're humble. We don't think we are that much better than everyone else. We feel we have put in the effort and time to be successful. It's big for us to win. It makes all the work we put in at practice worth it."

The one-two finish was planned.

"I told her to stay on my hip," Cardenas said. "The better Caitlyn gets, the better I will run."

The 800-relay team also posted a first-place finish as did the 1,600-relay team. For good measure, the Panthers placed first and second in the 1,600. Senior Noelle Glister was first with a 5:16.78 and senior Angela Buch was second at 5:19.15.

"We're very fortunate to have a lot of depth and we can move kids around," James said. "Some of our JV kids would have been top four or five (in the varsity races). We've really built it up through the cross country team. This is (1,600 winner) Glister's first year running track, but we are also very fortunate that our sophomore sprint class is absolutely loaded."

While O'Fallon dominated individually and on the team side, there were still some athletes who had big days.

Belleville East's Miya Dorsey took the 100 hurdles and edged Alton's LaJarvia Brown in the 300-hurdles — the closest race of the meet. Her effort helped the Lancers finish second overall.

"She's a senior. She does things right and has been working hard," East coach Bryan Mitchell said.

Dorsey edged Edwardsville's Autumn Harris in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 15.57. She ran a 43.70 to win the 300s. She broke the meet record of 45.75 set last year by Kristen Dowell of Edwardsville. Brown also broke the mark with her 43.78.

"I knew (Brown) was my competition," Dorsey said. "It was all heart on the straightaway."

Brown didn't get her usual triple, but she did set a meet mark winning the long jump with a leap of 18-1.5. She bested the old mark by almost a foot. In the triple jump, she set the meet record with a 39-1.5. The old mark of 37-0 was set last year by Kayla Marshall of Collinsville.

East St. Louis junior Aaliyah Herron also earned two conference first-place medals with a toss of 130-5 in discus and a meet record-breaking 42-10 in the shot put. The old record was 41-11.5 set by Aaliyah Covington of Edwardsville in 2014.

Edwardsville won the first running event, the 3,200 relay, as the Tigers' quartet of junior Danielle Bohannon, sophomores Bailey McGuire and Victoria Vegher and freshman Lori Cashdollar ran a 9:44.20.

Edwardsville had another first when junior Gabriella Romano won the pole vault (8-0).

Another first-place finish went to freshman Katie Mans of Alton in the high jump (5-4). Freshman Brea Marshall picked up the only first-place finish for Collinsville when she clocked a 1:00.58 in the 400 meters.
