Redbird Soccer nips Edwardsville 1-0 - Riverbender.com - 10/1/2015

Alton nips Edwardsville 1-0 in tight boys soccer match

ALTON – Thursday's rain-delayed Southwestern Conference showdown betweenEdwardsville and Alton certainly lived up to expectations.

The two teams battled on fairly even terms most of the night – until Eric Ferenbach broke through.

The senior forward took advantage of a Tiger turnover deep in their end and made no mistake, scoring past EHS goalkeeper Trey Riley in the 48th minute to get the Redbirds home in a 1-0 AHS win at Gordon Moore Park.

“That's a thing where, unfortunate, we had some mistakes at the wrong time,” said Tiger coach Mark Heiderscheid. “We had the ball, but it's high school kids, and we made a mistake and the ball went to the right player, and then he buries it.

“Aside from that, you don't want to delineate anything from Alton because that's not right. They worked very hard, they finished the goal. We had our chances. We had seven (corner kicks), so we're getting some territory, knocking the ball around pretty effectively.”

“Right spot at the right time,” said Redbird coach Jay Robertson. “You just have to wait for your opportunities, keep making those runs. We talked at halftime. He made some nice runs off the ball, made some nice diagnonals (runs); we just weren't getting it to the right spot.”

Ferenbach's goal gave the Redbirds some confidence. “We knew we could beat Edwardsville,” Ferenbach said. “The goal really boosted our confidence and we knew we could pull off the victory.”

From that point, the match fell into Redbird goalkeeper Devin Colley's hands, and Colley – who is playing soccer for the first time – was more than up to the challenge, making two key saves down the stretch to preserve the clean sheet.

“I felt pretty confident today,” Colley said. “There were a lot of things going on.

“I learn something new every game. I made sure I was completely focused and made sure I was there.”

Alton went to 9-4-3 overall, 2-0-1 in the SWC with the win; Edwardsville fell to 10-3-3 overall, 2-2-1 in the league. The Tigers travel to Carbondale for a match against the Terriers Saturday, while the Redbirds host Jersey in a Monday match.

FLORISSANT — When Alton’s Skylar Funk came screeching in from nowhere to challenge for a ball in the Hazelwood Central penalty area Friday night, the reaction of the Hawks’ defense was just as it was most of the game.

Surprised.

That’s the effect the Redbirds are having on folks these days. The Redbirds ended up scooting past Central 2-0 Friday at the Eagan Civic Center fields to capture the championship of the McCluer Invitational Tournament.

Funk was fouled on that play, setting teammate Eric Ferenbach with a penalty kick. And even though Hawksgoalie Jordan Hurt made a save on the PK, Ferenbach put two other shots past him.

“Eric played a really good game,” Alton coach Jay Robertson said. “He was pretty dynamic out there.”

ALTON- The Alton High School Redbirds Soccer team faced off againstBelleville East High School Lancers on the stormy evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Gordon F. Moore Park.

After a 3-0 loss of their own againstQuincy High School this past Saturday, Sept. 5, the Redbirds varsity squad were determined to stay on top of their game in their matchups against the Lancers.

The Redbirds’ offensive push in the first half of the game was second to none. Alton was constantly on the tails of Belleville, and spent most of the half on the opponent’s part of the field, scoping out opportunities to score.

After several attempts at the goal, Alton finally put their first point on the board by the 15-minute mark, making the score 1-0

Belleville was quick to gain possession of the ball, and used their intense defense to their advantage before they tied the score at 1-1 with 10:33 remaining of the first half.

However, with just over 8:00 minutes left on the clock, Alton eliminated the shortlived tied score with their second point of the game, making the score 2-1

Belleville East’s defense was a little bit too direct for the likings of the IHSA referees and constantly pushed the boundaries allowable without penalty. That, however, ended as soon as The Lancers’ goalie dived and tripped senior midfielder Nick Hatfield (#10), resulting in a red flag thrown down by the referees. The goalie was ejected from the game and replaced with the team’s other goalie. Hatfield took a quick breather to recover from the hit, and went on to score the Redbirds’ third point after the free kick. The score was 3-1 with 7:15 left of the first half.

After the buzzer sounded for halftime, the Redbirds and Lancers recouped while their coaches offered them words of encouragement.

Redbirds Head Coach Jay Robertsonwas eager for his team to give it all they could give in the second half of the game.

“We came out with a lot of focus and intensity tonight,” Robertson said, “I hope we come out and play hard and get a couple of goals in the back of the net.”

And that the Redbirds did. The second half of the game was as offensively strong as the first, earning three more points for AHS. The final score of the game was 6-1 in the Redbirds’ favor.

The junior varsity squads for both teams also faced off earlier in the afternoon, and even began their games early in order to miss the impending storms that were headed into the area. The teams tied at 0-0

The Alton High School Redbirds Soccer junior varsity and varsity teams will face off against O’Fallon Township High School at 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Gordon F. Moore Park.
