GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: Redbirds beat Warriors, secure 21st win
by Steve Porter
GODFREY – A quick start and fast finish propelled the Alton High volleyball team to a gratifying Senior Night win Tuesday at AHS.
Savannah Fisher of the Redbirds supplied the start and teammate Jada Green provided the finish as Alton defeated Granite City, 25-12, 26-24 in a Southwestern Conference match.
The Birds, beating the Warriors for the second time this season, improved to 21-4-1 and 2-2. One of those victories over Granite City came in the Alton Tournament. The Warriors dropped to 4-15-2 and 1-5.
“This was one of our biggest comebacks of the season,” said Green, a senior hitter. She accounted for six kills overall, including one to put the Redbirds in front 25-24 during the second game.
They added another point after that to cap an improbable comeback. Granite City led 15-6 and then owned a 23-19 advantage before the Redbirds rallied furiously for the win.
“We had one other comeback when we scored the final nine points to beat Orchard Farm after we trailed 13-6 in our tournament,” AHS coach Stacey Ferguson said. “Tonight’s was nice because it was in a conference match.
“I couldn’t ask for a better first game from our players. Then we came out the second game like we expected to win instead of earning a win. But once we realized we had to earn it, we went out and got some momentum going.
"We can't get too comfortable playing against anybody.”
Fisher, a junior hitter, contributed five kills, two blocks and three consecutive aces in the first game to keep the Redbirds rolling. After her third ace, they led 19-9 and never looked back.
“Savannah is probably our best overall player,” Ferguson said. “She can do it all: offense, defense and serving.”
Green is closing in on school records for single-season and career kills. Andrea McPike, a 2008 AHS graduate, holds both marks.
“I think I’m playing my best right now,” said Green, seeking to attend the University of Kentucky and major in economics.
Kailin Haug, the other Redbirds’ senior, collected four kills. Junior starters Gwen Hunter, Annie Evans and Kassie Funke, plus sophomore setter Sydney Schmidt also got in on the fun. Hunter and Schmidt combined for five aces to stymie the Warriors’ return game.
“We’ve been right in there and very close in a lot of games,” Granite City coach Ginger Harrison said of the team’s tough-luck plight. “I’m very proud of them because they play hard and they did that again tonight.
“A couple of calls tonight changed the momentum a little bit. But we have to find a way not to get rattled and keep our focus.”
Morgan Tanksley, a 5-foot-11 sophomore and Skylar Dippel, a 5-9 junior, teamed for nine kills to keep the Warriors in the thick of things. Ciara Yon also delivered some timely serving.
Yet Granite City couldn’t get to a third game and that enabled Alton to close out the Warriors quicker than they anticipated.
“Volleyball is a quick game and we have worked on some defensive changes,” Harrison said of the Warriors’ inconsistent service returns. “We kind of got caught not being in the right place a few times.”
The Redbirds’ schedule becomes more rugged starting Thursday night. Alton welcomes powerful Breese Mater Dei, then competes in the Highland Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

In the last tournament, we proved we could fight back when we get down. We got better by the end of the weekend and are playing our game and getting consistent.”
In Friday action, these were the results:
Alton vs. Carrolton (Alton won both matches, first match 25-14, 25-15 in second)
CM vs. Jerseyville (20-25 Jersey 1st, 25-22 CM 2nd, 15-12 CM 3rd match)

Jerseyville vs. Roxana (left before final score)

Green, Schmidt guide Alton to 25-17, 25-16 win over East Alton-Wood River
ALTON - The Alton girls’ volleyball team came to play on Tuesday night at the Alton High School Gym in a 25-17, 25-16 win over a solid East Alton-Wood Riverteam.
Jada Green delivered six key kills in the match, while Sydney Schmidt had nine service points and 15 assists to pace Alton.
“I think we definitely had some high points and positive things happen into the match as we go into this weekend,” said Alton volleyball coach Stacey Ferguson. “From my perspective, I saw things we need to clean up with keeping control and not having unforced errors, but I was really pleased how the girls pulled together and played.”
Alton raised its record to 2-1 with the win and moves to Redbird Tourney action on Friday and Saturday.
“We are looking forward to seeing what we can do against a variety of teams and a good mix of competition,” she said. “Triad is always a tough team and Southwestern has been on an upswing the last couple years. Orchard Park in the past has had some good players. We will have to work and play hard against these different teams.”

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: Redbirds defeat Oilers in volleyball
by Steve Porter
GODFREY — Some strong net play and solid serving propelled the Alton High volleyball team to a win Tuesday.
The Redbirds used both facets of their game to defeat visiting East Alton-Wood River, 25-17, 25-16 in a nonconference rivalry match. Alton improved to 2-1, while EA-WR dropped to 3-4.
“ It’s the beginning of the season, so we want to get all the kinks worked out and get in the right spots,” AHS senior Kailin Haug said. “I think our work ethic will determine how good we can be this season.”
The Redbirds used 24 kills, which accounted for nearly half of their points, to fend off the spunky Oilers. In addition, sophomore Sydney Schmidt went on an eight-point serving spree in the middle of the second game to erase an EA-WR lead and give the Birds a 20-13 advantage.
“ Sydney is learning a new position as our setter and there’s a lot of decision-making for her. She’s doing a good job of it and helping our setters,” Alton coach Stacey Ferguson said. Schmidt logged three aces.
Haug added, “She (Schmidt) has a strong serve and she has big shoes to fill, but she’s doing well and adapting to our hitters.” Schmidt has replaced the graduated Jordan Nolan, the AdVantage News Player of the Year, as the Redbirds’ setter.
Annie Evans and Kassidy Funke supplied more firepower as the Redbirds won their second successive match. Evans came off the bench to record four kills.
EA-WR coach Patti Scott noted, “Alton has a lot of talent and I thought we had more difficult with their serving than their play at the net. She (Schmidt) put a lot of spins on her serves.”
Senior Jada Green registered seven kills and a block to lead the Redbirds’ front line. Alexis Shaw contributed five kills and a block. Haug pitched in with four kills and a block, while Savannah Fisher collected three kills, two blocks and a pair of aces.
“ We had to work for all of our points because they (Oilers) are scrappy,” Ferguson said. “We have the offensive talent to score some points, but we have to make sure we keep everything else clean. We can’t give away points and have unforced errors.”
Lexie Johnson, Natalie Mundel and Shelby Yarborough combined for six kills to spur the Oilers. Morgan Moxey, Christen Falstitch and Brittany Grayson also contributed to the cause.
“ We played hard, hung in there and didn’t quit,” Scott said. “I was pretty proud of our effort. If we play where we are aggressive instead of just playing it safe, we’re pretty good.
“ And from what I see, I like this team. It’s evolving.”
While EA-WR resumes competition Thursday at Jersey, the Redbirds welcome Gillespie, Southwestern, Triad, Granite City and Orchard Farm of St. Charles, Mo. this weekend in their six-team classic. Action starts Friday and concludes Saturday.
“ The tournament will test our stamina and mental game,” Ferguson said. “We will play some competitive teams and we have to be ready to play. It will be challenging for us.”
She’s leaning on Haug, Green and Shaw to provide senior guidance and keep the Redbirds pointed in the right direction.
“ My role is to be one of the biggest leaders on the team, keep the energy level up and be a role model,” Haug said.
Ferguson sees good things ahead. “We have the determination to improve and we need to create kills for Jada up front," she said. "So we need to focus on the importance of our back row play for our defense."

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: Redbirds outlast Knights for first volleyball win
by Steve Porter
EDWARDSVILLE – Jada Green got going and so did the rest of the Alton High volleyball team Wednesday night at Hooks Gym.
The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter provided 10 kills and the Redbirds needed every one of them to subdue gritty Metro East Lutheran in a three-game nonconference match. The Knights won the first game 25-22. Then the Redbirds rebounded to prevail 25-15 and 25-22. Alton improved to 1-1. It was MELHS’ opener.
“We worked together when he needed to do it,” said Green, who had four kills apiece in the second and third games. “The first game was a little rough, then we picked up our intensity after that and got it together.”
Sophomore Sydney Schmidt supplied 22 assists and had a nice tip at the net for the final point of the night. “She is becoming a good setter and she made a pretty good play to end the (third) game. It was very timely.”
Kassie Funke collected 20 digs, while Savannah Fisher, Annie Evans, Kailin Haug, Alexis Shaw, Josie Hagen, Gwen Hunter and Calista Cox also pitched in with some timely play. Evans and Haug combined for nine kills.
“It was a tough match and that’s what we always expect when we play them,” AHS coach Stacey Ferguson said of the Knights. “We knew that we would have to earn a win – and we did that.”
The Knights won the opener in a tight game that was tied 13 times. MELHS’ three-point win was the largest difference along the way.
“I think we have a lot of options,” said Metro East Lutheran coach Jon Giordano, reflecting on his team’s outlook this season. “We have a good mix of youth and experience.”
He added, “I thought we did a good job of battling them. The difference tonight was that they (Redbirds) made more key plays than we did. We could have folder, but we didn’t stop fighting.”
Freshman Ellen Schulte, a product of Trinity Lutheran High in Edwardsville, excelled in her first varsity match. The 5-foot-8 middle hitter registered five kills and a block. Teammates Danielle Timmermann, Courtney Fenelon and Audrey Paitz backed her around the net. Ashlee Robinson, a 6-0 junior, logged three aces.
Green said the Redbirds jelled at the right time. They lost their season opener to Columbia on Monday and didn’t want to experience the same fate.
“It’ll really help us to get a win because it will give us more confidence,” she said.
Ferguson, a former MELHS assistant, added: “I was a little concerned after the first game because I thought we had a lack of focus. Then we started putting it together and we had to do that because Metro East Lutheran is always tough.
“It never fails when we play them. It’s a great match and it’s fun.”
The Redbirds have key matches next week with East Alton-Wood River (Tuesday), Belleville East (Wednesday), plus their own tournament (Saturday, Sept. 5). Green, one of three seniors on the team, figures to be a factor in all of them.
“Jada has the potential to become our single-season leader and career leader in kills,” Ferguson said.

Hamilton powers Columbia past Alton

Colene Hamilton
GODFREY • The Alton and Columbia High girls volleyball teams were coming off banner seasons in 2014.
The two combined for 58 victories, with Alton setting a school record with 25 wins. Columbia won 33 matches and advanced to the Class 3A sectional final.
But only one could open the season on a high note.
Columbia used a strong serve and serve-receive game to down Alton 25-15, 29-27 in a season-opening showdown at Alton High.
The Eagles recorded six aces in the first set and four more in the second. They did not commit a service error.
Junior Colene Hamilton led the way for Columbia with 11 kills and three aces. She kept the Redbirds off balance with tip kills along with those she hammered home.
"I thought we did OK for our first game of the season," Hamilton said. "Our offense is going to be pretty good and we're going to be a good team all-around. But we need to work on our blocking. It was rough in the second set."
Columbia held a slim 7-6 lead when Hamilton reeled off eight successive points for a 15-6 advantage. Juniors Jordan Hausmann and Ashley Warren had two kills apiece in the sequence.
Hausmann added five kills for the game. Warren and senior Claire Foster finished with three each.
"Colene had a great game," Columbia coach Kelly Landgraf said. "She kept her head when she needed to and was able to pull us through."
In the second set, Alton sophomore setter Sydney Schmidt entered the lineup for the first time and made a big difference in the Redbirds' passing, spacing and defense.
Alton led as late as 27-26, but couldn't stop the Eagles at the most crucial times. The game was tied 15 times after Alton had taken a 13-11 lead.
"We have a lot of players that haven't been in a situation like that before," Landgraf said. "When I look at the mistakes we made, they were a lot of mental errors."
Alton's Jada Green and Savannah Fisher picked up their play in the second set. Both finished the night with five kills apiece. Senior Alexis Shaw added three kills, all of them in the final part of the second game.
"Coming into this we knew we had a really tough home opener," Alton coach Stacey Ferguson said. "In the first set, we were a little slow to make some adjustments. The second game, we were able to get back to what will likely be our consistent lineup."

Redbirds hopes to build on record-setting campaign

Alton volleyball coach Stacey Ferguson talks to her players at practice on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Alton High School. Paul Kopsky, STLhighschoolsports.com
GODFREY • The Alton High volleyball team surprised a lot of people during last year's impressive record-setting campaign.
Count the Redbirds players among those that were the most stunned.
"I knew we could be pretty good," junior hitter Savannah Fisher said. "But 25 wins. Wow."
Alton, coming off the most wins ever in a single year, opened its 39th season Wednesday with the first day of practice.
Fisher, one of three key returning starters, realizes the shock factor is over.
The Redbirds are now relevant in the Southwestern Conference volleyball world.
"People used to kind of look at us and say, 'Oh, we're playing Alton, that's no big deal,' " senior Kailin Haug explained. "Now, we've kind of got a reputation to live up to."
The Redbirds will do their best to hang onto their new-found image despite losing five key cogs from last year's 25-8 squad that got off to a blistering 19-1 start.
Coach Stacey Ferguson, beginning her seventh season at helm, feels the breakout campaign will help establish her squad as one of the contenders in the super-tough SWC.
"We've always had talented girls," Ferguson said. "But the reality is that we had a group of girls that really worked together. They had the chemistry and that helped push us to that next level. Hopefully, this group will prove that they want to stay at that level."
Alton hosts Columbia in its season opener Aug. 24.
Haug believes her team will be able to keep up with the new high-level standards.
"It's going to be harder because everyone has higher expectations for us and we won't be able to surprise anyone," Haug said. "But we're ready for the challenge."
Fisher, Haug and senior hitter Jada Green lead the returnees. With 210 kills, Green came within 15 of setting a school single-season mark and likely will grab the career kill mark by the end of the season. Fisher, a softball standout, and Haug, add more depth up front.
Sophomore Sydney Schmidt will take over the setting chores from graduated standout Jordan Nolan, who holds the school record for most assists. Junior Annie Evans, one of the top weapons on the junior varsity team last season, will likely move into a starting role.
The Redbirds had three successive winning seasons before posting a 16-18 mark in 2013. Yet they have managed to hit the 20-win plateau just four times overall.
In other words, the program has been good — but not good enough to finish ahead of league toughies Edwardsville and O'Fallon.
Things might be different this time around.
"We had some seniors leave that filled some pretty big shoes," Ferguson said. "The girls have put in a lot of work this summer knowing they had to fill those shoes and I think they're going to be ready."
Ferguson, who has a 114-88 career mark, had 27 players show up on the first day of practice, a number that put a smile on her face.
"The 25 wins were great," Ferguson said. "But we want to push for 26 and maybe even more."
