GENEVA — The Alton High wrestling team came through with a second-place finish at the Newbill Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Geneva. Alton finished with 121.5 team, points, second to champion Harlem’s 146.5 points.

The Redbirds had a pair of individual tourney champions, as well as a third-place, a fourth-place, a fifth-place and three-seventh-place finishers.

Keontay Holmes captured the 182-pound championship when he defeated Trey Lalley of West Chicago by fall in the title bout.

Connor Broyles won the Redbirds other tournament championship at 132 pounds with a decision over Anthony Randazzo of Chicago Marian.

Alton’s Alejandro Lopez won the third-place bout in the 145-pound weight class with a decision over Sam Durfey of Stillman. Teammate Garrett Sims was the fourth-place finishers at 106 pounds and Nigel Ward won the fifth-place bout in the 113-pound weight class by fall over Ryan Elmendorf of host Geneva.

At 195 pounds, Keyondrick Russell; of Alton won the seventh-place bout by fall over Carmel’s Pete Malandrino. At 220 pounds, Anlecquan Russell of Alton defeated Geneva’s Zach Ostrowski 3-0 for seventh place. In the seventh-place bout at 285 pounds, the Redbirds’ Ryan Kane won by fall over Lornas Sweis of Oak Lawn.

In the team standings, Plainfield was third behind Alton with 109 pointds, followed by Carmel with 104.5, Chicago Brother Rice with 103, Lake Zurich 97, Wheaton Warrenville South 90, Oswego 84, Geneva 78, DundeeCrown 75, Marian Catholic 73, West Aurora 70, Larkin 63, West Chicago 55, Stillman Valley 53, and Lincoln-Way North 53 each, Harvard 46, Joliet Central 45, Oak Lawn 33, Chicago Boylan 20 and Mather 2 points.

The next action for Alton will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at Edwardsville against Beleville Althoff and the host Tigers.

Cavs third at Mount Olive

Carlinville grabbed third place Saturday at the Mount Olive Wrestling Tournament. The Cavies were led by Kyle and Jacob dixon, who each won indivdual championships.

Kyle Dixon won the 132-pound weight class with a win over Richard Jordan of Whitfield, Mo. and his brother Jacob won the 160-pound title by fall over Gant Wheelers of Rochester in the final.

Maxx Fritz of Mount Olkive was the 145-pound champion with a major decision victory over Cody Rightnower of Harrisburg.

Whitfield won the team title with 232 points, followed by Harrisburg with 183 points. The Cavaliers finished with 167 points for third. Rochester was fourth with 140 points. Host Mount Olive was seventh with 97.5 points.
