The Alton Redbirds put four wrestlers on the medal stand Tuesday at the 55th annual William ‘Red’ Schmitt Tournament at Memorial Gym in Granite City.
The Redbird got third-place performances from Keondrick Russell (17-5) at 195 pounds and Keontay Holmes (16-4) at 182. Alton added fifth-place finishes from Alejandro Lopez (18-2) at 145 and Connor Broyles (18-3) at 132.
Alton placed 13th in the 26-team field. Lafayette won the team championship with 583.5 points, with Kansas City Staley (523.5) and Neosho (518) producing a 1-2-3 finish for Missouri entries. Plainfield South and St. Louis CBC rounded out the top five.
Host Granite City was 11th, Collinsville was 16th, Triad 17th, East St. Louis 23rd and Granite’s JV tied for 26th.
