Redbirds Lose: 33 - 62
Alton Falls on the Road at Galesburg The Galesburg High School girls basketball team ended a two-game losing streak 62-33 to an aggressive Alton team in the Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday. Improving to 3-2 for the season, Silver Streaks coach Evan Massey sees one area for improvement despite the lopsided win. “Rebounding. We’ve got to be a better rebounding team,” he said after the Streaks edged Alton just 38-37 on the boards despite getting 10 rebounds from Lauren Livingston and eight from Audree Peck. “I thought we guarded them alright,” he added. “I didn’t think we rebounded well.” Alton, who showed up just before the game’s scheduled start time and dressed only eight players, was dominated from the start. A pair of Riley Jenkins’ 3-pointers helped spark the Streaks after the tip and they led 17-5 at the quarter and 36-14 at the half. Galesburg’s defense contributed to the Redbirds’ 2-for-13 shooting in the first quarter. The Streaks shot 12-for-32 (37.5 percent) in the first half but five of their buckets were 3-pointers. “They switched from man-to-man to zone and back to man-to-man and I thought we handled that pretty well,” said Massey of Alton’s defensive efforts. Jenkins’ 18 points led the Streaks, Chelsea Stevenson scored 9 and Peck 8. The win comes after the Streaks suffered two tough losses - 50-46 to Springfield and 54-51 in overtime at Geneseo. “I think what’s nice is from game-to-game, we’re getting nice contributions from a number of players,” said Massey. “Riley has been really consistent throughout but we’ve had some other people stepping up with scoring.” Galesburg 62, Alton 33 A - 5-9-11-3 - 33 G - 17-19-16-10 - 62 Alton (1-3) - Wilson 2-11 1-2 6, Anthony 0-4 0-0 0, Goree 1-6 0-0 2, Davis 0-0 0-0 0, Wallace 4-18, 1-4 12, Patterson 1-7 1-2 3, Smith 4-6 3-4 11, Knight 0-0 0-0 0.
