WRESTLING
CLASS 3A — The Alton Redbirds took six wrestler to the Class 3A Normal Community Sectional, five of them will be moving on to state.
Alton's Phyllip DeLoach (145), Nicholas DeLoach (152) and Qiant'e Wagner (160) all won sectional crowns, while Connor Broyles (120) and Darian Pierson (285) finished fourth to advance. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the IHSA state finals beginning on Thursday at Champaign's State Farm Center.
Granite City moved senior Devon Simpson (138) onto state with a fourth place finish. Simpson will be the lone representative for the Warriors on the state mat.
Other local wrestlers who advanced at the 3A sectional were: Edwardsville's Tanner Ambry (120), James Zeigler (152), Chris Prosser (160) and James Watters (182), Belleville West's Nick Foster (145) and Ricky Nelson (285), O'Fallon's Keajion Jennings and Belleville East's Matthew Striegel.
CLASS 2A — Civic Memorial saw two of its four remaining wrestlers advance out of the Class 2A Mattoon Sectional on Saturday.
Drake Boverie (132) won a sectional crown Saturday and Brayton Williams (152) took second. Both wrestlers will compete at the Class 2A state tournament in Champaign starting Thursday.
Other locals to make it out of Mattoon were: East St. Louis' Chrishon Tucker (106), Christopher Tucker (113), Tyler Dunn (126), Marquez Robinson (132), Don Cavitt (138) and Antonio James (285), Mascoutah's Trenton Finch (106) and Jacob Musick (220), Cahokia's Antwone Johnson (113) and Marlon Manuel (120), Highland's Jacob Mitchell (120), Mason Lee (152), Trent Rakers (160) and Nick Czar (285), Triad's Merik Fulton (126), Cole Wysocki (138), Cole Witzig (170), Alex Crehan (182) and Matt Sarhage (220), Jersey's Brandon Critchfield (132) and Waterloo's Paul Stewart (138).
CLASS 1A — The Roxana Shells and East Alton-Wood River Oilers made sure they would be represented on the state stage on Saturday the Class 1A Vandalia Sectional.
Roxana's Dalton Brito had the standout performance, winning the crown at 126 pounds to move onto the Class 1A state tournament in Champaign on Thursday through Saturday. The Shells also got James Henseler (106) and Jarod Foiles (132) through. Henseler took third while Foiles was second. The top four advance.
EA-WR will be represented by Drew Sobol (106) and Zac Blasioli (152) at state. Sobol finished second while Blasioli was third.
Other local wrestlers to move on were: Litchfield's Colin Davidson (106) and Cole Werner (220), Althoff's Chase Bittle (113), Jevon Hey (126), Jarid Braunagel (132), Daniel Braunagel (138), Zach Braunagel (160) and Rodney Baker (285) and Mount Olive's Maxx Fritz (132).
