WRESTLING
NICHOLAS DELOACH EARNS OUTSTANDING WRESTLER IN ALTON TOURNEY WIN — The Alton Redbirds won the Geneva Invitational on Saturday, compiling 203 points in their title run.
Alton outdistanced second place Harvard (133) and third place Plainfield Central (131.5) to garner the tourney crown.
Nicholas DeLoach paced the Birds, winning outstanding wrestler for the tournament while securing the championship at 152 pounds.
Other individual champions for Alton were: Connor Broyles (120), Phyllip DeLoach (145), Qiant'e Wagner (160) and Darian Pierson (285). KeOntay Holmes earned second place at 182 pounds also. Overall there were 12 AHS wrestlers with top 10 finishes.
The Redbirds return to the mat at 6 p.m. Thursday for a triangular with Edwardsville and Belleville Althoff. Alton and Edwardsville are currently tied atop the Southwestern Conference with Belleville West and Granite City. The four teams have only suffered one SWC loss apiece.
ROXANA FINISHES 14TH AT PRINCETON INVITE — The Roxana Shells traveled to Princeton on Friday and Saturday and finished 14th in the tough 33-team Princeton Invite.
Dakota ran away with the tourney title with 312.5 points. Second-place Byron had 182.5 points.
The Shells were directed by a pair of third place finishers in Dalton Brito (126) and Jared Foiles (132).
EA-WR TAKES SIXTH AT MOUNT OLIVE TOURNEY — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers earned a sixth place finish in the Mount Olive Tournament on Saturday behind an individual championship run by Drew Sobol at 106 pounds.
Whitfield (Mo.) garnered the title of the tournament with 239.5 points. Mount Olive (178), Rochester (158.5), Harrisburg (133.5) and Carlinville (133.5) rounded out the top five teams.
Sobol was joined in the individual standouts for EA-WR by Zac Kincade who finished second at 182 pounds.
CM GRABS 11TH IN CARBONDALE — The Civic Memorial Eagles participated in the Murdale Tournament in Carbondale on Friday and Saturday, nabbing 11th place out of 21 teams.
Belleville Althoff barely squeaked out a tourney title with 176 points. Carbondale was second, just a half point behind, with 175.5 points.
Drake Boverie and Brayton Williams were both flawless for the Eagles, earning individual championships. Boverie (132) and Williams (152) both wrestled to 4-0 marks to garner their individual crowns. CM's Brandon Carpenter (182) finished in third place also.
BOYS' BASKETBALL
CM PREVAILS AGAINST GIBAULT — The Civic Memorial picked up a big road win on Saturday, defeating Gibault 48-36 in Waterloo.
With the victory the Eagles improved to 9-5, while the Hawks slipped to 9-6 with the defeat.
CM's 6-foot-8 senior Jakob Lowrance directed the Eagles with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Jaquan Adams matched his output with 11 points. Zach Lehnen joined them in double digits with 10 points.
Next on the docket for CM is a 7:30 p.m. game Tuesday at Granite City. The Eagles and Warriors met on Nov. 29 on GCHS with the Eagles edging out a 49-48 victory.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL
ROXANA EARNS SCC WIN OVER PANA — The Roxana Shells welcomed Pana on Saturday and pulled out a 51-47 South Central Conference victory.
Roxana improved to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in the SCC.
Maddy Sheraka exploded to pace the the Shells with 25 points, while Hannah Rexford joined her in the double figures with 12 points.
Roxana is back in action with SCC play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Gillespie.
