PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Quincy ends Redbirds’ season

SPRINGFIELD – Delusions of grandeur did not join the Alton Redbirds on their Monday night bus ride to downtown Springfield.

Alton was the No. 11 seed in an 11-team sub-sectional and the end that was expected came without surprise when the Quincy Blue Devils’ won 43-36 to leave the Redbirds one-and-done at the Springfield Class 4A Regional.

It was a quiet close to another lost season for Alton girls basketball. But the Redbirds never surrendered after falling behind 14 points midway through the second quarter.

“We kind of let it get away there in the first half and we knew that it shouldn’t have been a 14-point game,” Alton coach Bob Rickman said. “Our girls knew we could compete with them. (Quincy) certainly gave us opportunities to get back in the game. We just didn’t take advantage of enough of them. That’s part of having a young team.”

A 3-pointer from Cri’shonna Hickman triggered a push that drew the Redbirds within three points (35-32) on a basket from Rayn Tally and a free throw from Ayonna Clanton with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter.

But Alton could not keep the ball out of the hands of Quincy’s 5-foot-2 senior speedball Jada Humphrey, who went the length of the court through traffic and converted a three-point play that put the Devils lead at six and deflated the Redbirds.

“We missed shots and made turnovers that we have no excuse for,” Rickman said. “You can’t win when you do those things.”

That has been a season-long theme for the Redbirds, who finish 3-23. Quincy is 12-14 and advances to play the top-seeded Springfield Senators (24-4) in the semifinals.

“I am not disappointed in the effort,” Rickman said. “I’m disappointed in our execution and our ability to do certain things. But the effort was great. It wasn’t how hard we played, it was how we played.”

Hickman, a sophomore, scored 13 points and junior Diarra Smith had 11 for the Redbirds, who had lost to Quincy 44-20 on Dec. 20 in Jefferson City, Missouri.
