GRANITE CITY — A rough first period was enough to spell the end of the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association playoffs for the Alton Redbirds Monday night.

Belleville scored four times in the first and went onto down Alton 4-0 in a late-night game at the Granite City Ice rink. The loss for the Redbirds means Belleville sweeps the best-of-three Class 1A semifinal series two games to none.

“We played tough,” Alton coach Steven Campbell said. “We just couldn’t get on the board.”

Belleville which had defeated Alton in Game 1 of the series last Thursday, will advance to the Class 1A finals against the winner of a series between Granite City and Triad. The best-of-three finals are set to get under way Thursday at the East Alton Ice Arena.

Belleville got two goals from Caleb Little and others from Garrett Dahm and Matthew West in the first period.

The final two periods were toe-to-toe hockey. Neither team could score – bit Belleville didn’t need any more goals.

“They’re a fast team,” Campbell said of Belleville. “They were all over for three solid periods.”

Little got Belleville on the scoreboard early when he scored at 13:40, assisted by Justin Araiza. Just two minutes later, it was 2-0 after a goal from Dahm, also assisted by Araiza.

Little made it 3-0 at 4:38 of the first period and West scored with 17 seconds remaining in the period to make it 4-0.

Belleville outshot the Redbirds 42-12, but Alton stayed in the game because of the goaltending of Caleb Currie, who made 38 saves.

“Currie played a wonderful game,” Campbell said. “He made a lot of big saves to keep it 4-0.”

The Redbirds created scoring chances of their own, but “we just couldn’t capitalize,” according to Campbell.

“We had a good season for such a young team,” Campbell said. “I’m proud of these kids.”
