Alton’s Holmes, Sims win titles at Geneva

KeOntay Holmes returned to the top of the medals stand Saturday at the 38th annual Newbill Wrestling Tournament in Geneva.

The Alton senior won the 182-pound championship for the second straight season and helped the Redbirds to a fourth-place finish in the 22-team tourney.

Alton had nine wrestlers turn in a top-eight finish while scoring 133.5 points. Wheaton-Warrenville South posted 199.5 points to win the team title. Plainfield Central (148), Lake Zurich (134), Alton, and Marian Central (133) rounded out the top five.

It was the Redbirds’ fourth appearance at Geneva. Alton won back-to-back Newbill championships in 2014-15 before placing second in 2016.

Holmes, runner-up at 182 pounds as a sophomore before winning at 182 last season, was joined by Garrett Sims as champs for Alton. Sims won the title at 113 pounds.

The Redbirds got a third-place finish from Christian Everage at 170, and fourth from Keyondrick Russell at 195. Other placers for Alton were Courteney Wilson (fifth at 145), Ryan Kane (fifth at 285), Nolan Woszczysnki (seventh at 160), Grady Womack (seventh at 220) and Hunter Hobbs (eighth at 126).
