Simon’s goal with 5:50 remaining in the third period lifted Alton to a 4-3 victory over East Alton-Wood River in Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association action at the East Alton Ice Arena.

Simon’s goal capped an Alton rally that saw the Redbirds twice come back from a two-goal deficit.

The victory lifted Alton to 2-4-1 on the season. The Oilers are 2-6. In other MVCHA action Tuesday, Edwardsville beat Triad 8-2, Freeburg/Waterloo beat Granite City 4-1 and Collinsville beat Highland 8-4.

“We came out strong and played well the entire game,” Alton coach Steven Campbell said. “We brought a physical game, something we have been missing all season.”

While the Redbirds brought that physical game, it was the Oilers who struck first and claimed a 2-0 lead after the first period. But the redbirds cut the lead in half early in the second period, fell behind by two goals again, then tied it with aback-to-back goals to close the second.

The Redbirds, who outshot the Oilers 49-18 overall, had a 15-7 shots edge in the first period, but it was EA-WR that notched the goals.

Tyler McHatton scored an unassisted goal at 10:49 of the first period to make it 1-0.

After Oilers goalie Tyler Hamby blocked a deluge of Redbirds shots, teammate Jacob Vassos gave EA-WR its first two-goal edge when he scored with 1:31 left in the period, assisted by Noylan Royse.

In a wild second period, the Redbirds had a whopping 25 shots, but Hamby came up with 22 saves.

Alton goalie Maddie Dallas also came up big. Even though not tested as often as Hamby, Dallas made a breakaway save in the third to keep the game tied at that point.

“(Dallas) played a very good game for us,” Campbell said. “That breakaway save kept us in the game in the third period.”

The Redbirds’ rally started when Tanner St. Peters scored from an assist by Simon to make it 2-1 at 10:42 of the second. But the Oilers’ Kaleb Harrop got that goal back three minutes later with an unassisted goal of his own.

That was the last goal for EA-WR.

St. Peters’ second goal, unassisted, got the Redbirds back within a a goal at 3-2.

Tristen Seymour knotted the score at 3-3 for Alton when he scored off assists from Seymour and St. Peters with three minutes left in the second period, setting up a tense third period – and ultimately Simon’s game winner.

In Thanksgiving eve action Wednesday, O’Fallon will face Edwardsville at 7 p.m. and Triad will play Highland at 8:30 at East Alton. Collinsville will play Columbia at 9:10 p.m. at the Granite City Ice rink.

EA-WR will be off until Dec. 1, when the Oilers will play Triad at 7:15 in East Alton. Alton’s next game is set for Nov. 29, when the Redbirds will face Edwardsville at 7:15 p.m. at East Alton.

“We had several nice passes and some good hits,” Campbell said. “This is the type of game you want to see before playing Edwardsville.”
