Alton High dropped its last pool game Wednesday in the CYC/Bob Guelker Soccer Tournament, but will advance to the semifinals anyway. The Redbirds, who fell to host Seckman 2-0, will still advance with the wild card in the Sullivan Division as the second-place pool team with the most points.

Alton will play Troy, Mo. Buchanan High at 4:15 p.m. Friday in a Walsh Division semifinal.

Meanwhile Marquette Catholic, in the tourney’s Walsh Division, saw its tourney record drop to 0-2 with a 3-1 loss at Triad.

Alton’s Redbirds finished with 10 points. They maxed out in their first game, a 4-0 victory over Washington, Mo. on Monday and received five points for a 3-0 win over Affton Tuesday. Teams receive four points for each victory and a bonus point for a shutout.

Seckman finished 3-0 with 15 points and won Pool B, with Alton second. Troy Buchanan won Pool A with a 3-0 mark and 14 points. Liberty High School of Wentzville, Mo. won Pool C with a 3-0 mark and 14 points.

In its loss to Seckman, Alton had an 18-13 advantage in shots, but wasn’t able to find the back of the net and dropped to 8-3 overall. Seckman, winning its third consecutive game, evened its overall record at 6-6.

“We had moments of good soccer, but struggled overall and once again. struggled to find the net with a large shot volume,” Alton coach Nick Funk said.

Seckman forward Josh Small scored a goal in each half, with assists going to Ryan Berhorst and Cody Eakins.

“All (Seckman’s) positive lay went through him,” Funk said. “As far as skill, they were one of the better teams we’ve seen.”
