COLLINSVILLE – A 13-point outing in Tuesday’s victory over East St. Louis did little to inspire Marcus Latham.

“Last game, I was kind of in a slump,” he said.

That slump was ended Friday night at Fletcher Gym, where Latham went off for 33 points to lead the Alton Redbirds to a 71-51 Southwestern Conference boys basketball victory over the Collinsville Kahoks.

“I was shooting a lot at practice (Thursday) and came out tonight in warmups and was hitting,” Latham said. “It carried over into the game.”

The 6-foot-1 senior made 10 of 16 shots from the field and 6 of 6 free throws. He knocked down four 3-pointers in the first half and finished 7 of 13 from the arc against the Kahoks zone.

“He didn’t force a whole lot of stuff,” Alton coach Eric Smith said of Latham. “He didn’t try to put it on the floor and do too much. It was just teammates creating stuff for him – drive, kick, catch and shoot. It’s a pretty easy game when you do it that way.”

The victory was the Redbirds’ eighth straight over Collinsville. The Redbirds improve to 12-8 and 8-3 in the SWC, but were unable to close ground on front-runningEdwardsville in the conference race. The Tigers beat Granite City 54-47 to move to 19-4 and 10-0 in the league.

The Redbirds staggered the Kahoks immediately with Latham hitting two 3’s and scoring eight points to help put Alton up 12-0 three minutes in while Collinsville misfired on its first nine shots.

“It’s been a long time through this season since we’ve come out and just hit somebody in the face,” Smith said. “That was nice to see.”

Alton led 25-12 after one quarter before the Kahoks closed within 36-28 at halftime. A Tommy Maden 3-pointer cut the Redbirds’ lead to 38-31 early in the third quarter, but Alton responded with a 13-2 run regain command.

Maden, who made 6 of 17 shots including 5 of 10 from the arc, scored 17 points to lead the Kahoks, who drop to 9-15 and 1-9 in the SWC. Collinsville shot 40 percent (20 of 50) from the field. The Kahoks made 9 of 25 3-pointers and 2 of 7 free throws.

Maurice Edwards scored 14 points for Alton, including a thunderous dunk on a fourth-quarter drive through traffic in the lane. Ty’ohn Trimble came off the bench to hit a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers and finished with nine points.

Alton shot 41 percent (23 of 56) from the field, including 10 of 24 from 3-point range, and 15 of 22 from the foul line.

“Our kids have adapted pretty well to a lot of different things, people have tried to defend us differently, and it’s nice to see us progress and be able to play different ways to win a game.” Smith said. “Defensively, we did some things better. Offensively, we were still kind of stagnant at certain points. … For the most part, our kids played pretty well.”
