The Alton High girls soccer team grabbed its first victory of the season Tuesday with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Freeburg at Gordon Moore Park. The Redbirds are 1-4.
On the eve of their second game of the season against city rival Marquette Catholic High, AHS’s Redbirds got a pair of goals from Haley Haar against Freeburg in their victory.
Haar scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute, assisted by Kirsten Funk.
After spotting Freeburg a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, Haar scored off an assist from Sofia Macias in the 30th minute to make it 1-1 at halftime. Alton outshot Freeburg 18-1.
“We had tons of scoring opportunities, but had a difficult time putting the ball in the net,” Alton coach Laura Ridolfi said.
Alton and Marquette are scheduled to square off at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Park. Last Wednesday, the Explorers rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Redbirds in the Metro Cup Tournament in Columbia.
