SPRINGFIELD – Addison Kaufmann and Matt Daniel of Alton had something in common Saturday.
Both Redbirds landed spots in next week’s IHSA boys’ swim finals at Winnetka.
Kaufmann, a senior, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.01 and took third in the 200 individual medley at 1:57.23 in the Springfield Sectional. Daniel, a freshman, finished second in the 500 free at 4:43.52.
“They were all fabulous and did a wonderful job today,” AHS coach Lynda Willings Saturday. “Addison has an exciting win.”
Kaufmann and Daniel will swim next Friday in the prelims at Chicagoland’s New Trier High. The finals are set for Saturday.
“There will be a lot of competitive swimmers at state, but we are looking for good finishes,” Willings said.
She added, “Addison is a hard worker and he deserves all the accolades he gets. He’s very dedicated. Matt is probably the hardest working swimmer I’ve ever seen. His future looks very bright.”
Host Springfield High scored 264 points to snare the team championship. Edwardsville placed second with 198 points and Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin came in third with 174 points in the eight-team competition.
Alton had participants in the swimming and diving competition. Willings said the Redbirds are going to continue to improve.
“Overall, it was a good day for us,” she said. “We have some good young swimmers and I was extremely proud of our freshmen. We’ll see more good things coming from them.”
Daniel took third in the 200 free and Matt Quigley nabbed a fourth in the diving competition, though neither qualified for state in those events. The Redbirds finished second in the 200 free relay, the 400 free relay and sixth in the 200 medley. In addition, Cole Akal was fourth in the 50 freestyle and 100 free.
